The monkey-puzzle trees, Araucaria araucana, based upon fossil records have been around for 60 million years. This unique and rare evergreen tree is the national tree of Chile and is also known as the Chilean pine tree. The ornate and showy architectural form attracts attention all year round. The monkey-puzzle trees reptilian branches are very symmetrical with dark green leaves that are stiff with sharp needles that cover the limbs like armor. Ninety percent of all the Araucaria araucana’s were located in the Chilean Malleco National Reserve until the fire seasons of 2001 and 2002, and then everything changed. | ||
